the DOJ is investigating the Republican efforts to nullify the 2020 election and Rep. Scott Perry, an ally of former President Donald Trump, is apparently a key figure in the investigation.

Perry’s phone was seized Tuesday and various legislators in Pennsylvania have been subpoenaed by the FBI looking for information on the Republican from Pennsylvania.

The California congressman called the seizure “surprising” because “probable cause” that Perry committed a crime should have been established.

“And the fact that it was the phone of a member of Congress, I think, would make the Justice Department even more certain, or need to be certain, that they had probable cause,” Schiff told host Margaret Brennan on Thursday. “Face the Nation” from CBS News.

“And that also suggests that the Department thinks this bogus election plot was a violation of the law, which I think it certainly was. So I think it’s very significant. All those aspects,” he added.

Trump allies have been accused of trying to create substitute lists of voters in support of Trump in seven swing states: including Pennsylvania — annul Biden’s presidential victory.

perry has Said he introduced Trump to Jeffrey Clark, a Justice Department official who believed the choice was inaccurate. The House Select Committee on January 6 found that Clark, who Trump tried to place as attorney general, wrote a draft of an unsent letter to officials in six states suggesting they select alternate electors.

Perry called the seizure of his phone an “abuse of power” in “Sunday Morning Futures” from Fox News.

“Anyone who isn’t bending the knee, who isn’t intimidated, who isn’t repeating the narrative, is now subject to these kinds of third world banana republic tactics,” he added.

Perry, who was endorsed by Trump in 2018 and 2020, was the first lawmaker to have his phone seized during the investigation. The Washington Post reported.

Text messages obtained by the House Select Committee on January 6 found that Perry sent a text message to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows five days after President Biden was declared the winner of the presidential election. 2020 elections for “immediately seize” Dominion’s voting machines. Perry argued that “the British” and the CIA rigged the vote.

Trump’s former advisers said that Perry, who has been a vocal supporter of Trump and unsubstantiated conspiracy theoriesit is one of six Republican lawmakers who sought preemptive pardons after the January 6 riots at the Capitol.

Perry and Schiff did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
