SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom is running for re-election in California, but his latest television ad airs in Florida.
the 30 second spot Scheduled to air on Fox News beginning Monday, it criticizes Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his policies, while also contrasting with California.
“Liberty, you are under attack in your state. Republican leaders are banning books, making it difficult to vote, restricting speech in the classroom, and even criminalizing women and doctors,” Newsom says as images of DeSantis and former President Donald Trump flash across the screen.
“I urge everyone who lives in Florida to join the fight. Or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom: freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom from hate, and freedom to love,” says Newsom.
Newsom has said he has no interest in running for president, but the announcement is sure to stoke speculation that the 54-year-old Democrat is seeking national office. DeSantis is a possible Republican candidate for the White House in 2024.
Newsom easily repelled an impeachment attempt last year and is expected to sail for re-election in November.
