Jan 6 panel could make multiple Trump criminal references, says Liz Cheney

The House panel investigating the Insurrection of January 6 could make multiple criminal references of former President Donald Trump to the Justice Department, his Vice President, Rep. liz cheney (R-Wyo.), he said Sunday.

In an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Cheney said it was possible the panel would make a criminal referral and “we will make a decision as a committee” on whether to do so.

“The Justice Department doesn’t have to wait for the committee to make a criminal referral,” he said. “There could be more than one criminal reference.”

Criminal charges have never been brought against a sitting or former US president. Asked what it would mean for the nation if President Joe Biden’s Justice Department indicted his predecessor and potential rival in 2024, Cheney said, “I’m more concerned about what it would mean if people weren’t held accountable for what happened.” here”.

“I think it’s a much more serious constitutional threat if a president can engage in these kinds of activities and, you know, the majority of the president’s party looks the other way or we as a country decide, you know, we’re not actually going to take our constitutional obligations seriously,” he said. “I think it’s a much, much more serious threat.”

“I think there is no doubt, I mean, a man as dangerous as Donald Trump can never be anywhere near the Oval Office again,” he added later.

The panel has presented startling evidence demonstrating how Trump and his team may have knowingly violated various laws in their effort to nullify the 2020 election. At the latest hearing, the panel also noted a new concern: that Trump allies could be trying to intimidate witnesses cooperate with the investigation, which is also a crime.
