Governor of California Gavin Newsom (D) released a new campaign ad over the July 4th weekend urging Floridians to fight a list of discriminatory new laws introduced by Republican lawmakers…or instead move to the other side of the country to your own state.
“Liberty is under attack in your state,” Newsom said in the 30-second video, which will air on Fox News as part of a $105,000 ad buy. “Your Republican leaders are banning books, making it harder to vote, restricting speech in classrooms, even criminalizing women and doctors.”
“I urge everyone who lives in Florida to join the fight or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom,” he continues. “Freedom of expression, freedom to choose, freedom from hate and freedom to love.”
The announcement comes amid a flurry of new laws passed by Florida’s Republican-controlled legislature in recent months. On July 1, the state “Don’t Say Gay” Bill, which restricts what teachers can say about gender and sexual orientation in classrooms, came into effect. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) also signed another law that would have banned all abortions in the state after 15 weeks of pregnancy with no exceptions for victims of rape or incest which was also scheduled to take effect July 1. That law was temporarily blocked by a judge last week.
Newsom is currently running for re-election in California, hoping to win a second term in November, as is DeSantis. Both are seen as rising stars in their parties with an eye on a future presidential candidacy.
A spokesperson for DeSantis he told CNN Florida’s governor was not bothered by the new announcement.
“Gavin Newsom might as well set fire to a stack of cash,” spokesman Dave Abrams told the outlet. “Pass the popcorn for his desperate attempt to bring back California refugees who fled the hell he created in his state to come to Florida.”
